Cisco Meraki Wi-Fi 6E vs. Wi-Fi 7: Which Is Right for Your Business?

Wi-Fi 7 takes wireless performance further. Cisco’s current Meraki-managed lineup includes CW9170-series access points supporting the newer 802.11be standard.

When Does Meraki Wi-Fi 6E Make Sense?

We see Wi-Fi 6E as a strong option for businesses that need better wireless capacity without necessarily requiring the latest Wi-Fi 7 infrastructure.

The Meraki MR57, for example, is a tri-band Wi-Fi 6E access point supporting 2.4 GHz, 5 GHz, and 6 GHz connectivity. Cisco lists it with a tri-radio aggregate frame rate of up to 7.8 Gbps and dual 5 Gbps multigigabit Ethernet ports.

For an office replacing older Wi-Fi 5 or early Wi-Fi 6 hardware, moving to Wi-Fi 6E can provide a meaningful upgrade, especially as more laptops and mobile devices support the 6 GHz band.

However, the benefit depends on the client devices connecting to the network. Older devices cannot take advantage of 6 GHz simply because the access point supports it.

When Is Wi-Fi 7 Worth Considering?

We would consider Wi-Fi 7 more seriously for organizations building new infrastructure, supporting high-density environments, or planning a network expected to remain in service for several years.

Cisco’s current Wi-Fi 7 portfolio includes models such as the CW9176I/D1 and CW9178I. Cisco lists the CW9176I/D1 with 12 spatial streams and a 10 Gbps multigigabit interface, while the CW9178I is positioned as an ultra-high-performance model with 16 spatial streams and dual 10 Gbps interfaces.

Those specifications can make Wi-Fi 7 attractive for demanding campuses, high-density offices, collaboration-heavy workplaces, and environments where many devices compete for wireless capacity.

But faster access points can expose limitations elsewhere.

Do You Need to Upgrade Your Switches Too?

This is one of the areas we recommend checking before buying new access points.

A high-performance wireless access point connected to an older 1 Gbps switch port may not be able to use its full wired uplink capability. Newer Meraki access points may use multigigabit Ethernet, and their power requirements also need to match the PoE capabilities of the switch.

In practice, that means a wireless upgrade can become a broader network-infrastructure project.

Before ordering, we suggest reviewing the access point, switch ports, PoE availability, cabling, internet connection, and expected client load together.

Wi-Fi 6E or Wi-Fi 7: Which Should You Buy?

We would not recommend Wi-Fi 7 simply because it is newer.

Wi-Fi 6E can still be a practical choice for organizations upgrading aging wireless networks, particularly when current devices already support 6 GHz. Wi-Fi 7 becomes more compelling when higher capacity, future device compatibility, demanding workloads, or a longer infrastructure lifecycle justify the additional investment.

The right answer depends on the environment.
